Kamloops hit and run ends with standoff at motel

KAMLOOPS – What started off as a hit and run collision ended with a man barricading himself in a motel room last night in Kamloops.

Kamloops RCMP say they responded to numerous calls yesterday, Aug. 19, of a man associated with a suspicious vehicle, according to an RCMP media release.

Police say the vehicle had been involved in a hit and run collision and then was abandoned in the 400 block of Columbia Street.

Shortly after, police say they received calls of a man in some form of distress causing a very loud disturbance at a motel in the area.

“The male was allegedly smashing windows and causing damage to vehicles in the area,” Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Brandon Buliziuk says in a release.

A large police presence could be seen in the area of the motel. Police say the man had unlawfully barricaded himself in a motel room.

After a short period of time and with the assistance of a police dog, entry was made into the room and the suspect was brought into custody.

The 34-year-old man currently remains in custody and police have forwarded charges to the B.C. Prosecution Service.
