Mexico’s Holbox ecotourism resort bans Styrofoam, PET

MEXICO CITY – The Mexican government has banned disposable containers at the Holbox resort, located at the tip of the Yucatan peninsula.

Holbox is best known for its shallow seas, flamingos and whale sharks. But the small, eco-tourist resort has been plagued by problems of deficient infrastructure and unlicensed expansion.

The new rules announced Monday will ban all Styrofoam, PET and other non-biodegradable containers from being taken to the resort, a natural protected area.

The rules announced by the environment department also forbid the construction of large resort hotels, golf courses and airstrips.

They forbid wastewater discharges into the Gulf and Caribbean, but provisions have not yet been made at Holbox for adequate waste water collection and treatment.
