Most actively traded companies on the TSX

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (14,972.97, up 90.47 points):

ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TSX:PLI). Biotechnology. Up two cents, or 0.96 per cent, to $2.10 on 20.8 million shares.

B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Up 20 cents, or 10.10 per cent, to $2.18 on 6.5 million shares.

Athabasca Oil Corp. (TSX:ATH). Oil and gas. Up one cent, or 0.33 per cent, to $3.08 on 4.7 million shares.

Romarco Minerals Inc. (TSX:R). Miner. Up one cent, or 1.47 per cent, to 69 cents on 4.6 million shares.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Up 32 cents, or 10.49 per cent, to $3.37 on 4.3 million shares.

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Up 31 cents, or 6.90 per cent, to $4.80 on 4.2 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

George Weston Ltd. (TSX:WN). Retail. Up 10 cents, or 0.11 per cent, to $94.60 on 117,759 shares. The company earned a profit from continuing operations attributable to shareholders of $53 million or 30 cents per share, compared with $168 million or $1.21 per share a year ago. Results were hit by costs related to the acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart by Weston subsidiary Loblaw Cos. (TSX:L).

Sears Canada (TSX:SCC). Retail. Down 24 cents, or 2.18 per cent, to $10.75 on 34,024 shares. The company posted a quarterly loss of $118.7 million or $1.16 per share, more than double the retailer’s 2013 third-quarter loss. Quarterly revenue dropped to $834.5 million from $982.3 million.

TransCanada (TSX:TRP). Oil and gas. Down 57 cents, or 1.01 per cent, to $56 on 1.5 million shares. The U.S. Senate was expected to vote on the Keystone XL pipeline Tuesday night. Supporters need 60 votes but it was not clear they had the numbers to approve the legislation let alone overcome an expected veto by President Barack Obama if measure does pass.
