Longtime Sabres broadcaster Rick Jeanneret says he’s now cancer free
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Longtime Buffalo Sabres announcer Rick Jeanneret said Friday night that he was cancer free.
Jeanneret, who has done Sabres play-by-play broadcasting since the franchise’s second season in 1971-72, was diagnosed with throat cancer this past summer.
On the local television broadcast before the “Hockey Fights Cancer” game against the Edmonton Oilers, Jeanneret said he was told this week that, at least at the moment, the cancer was gone.
The 72-year-old native of St. Catharines, Ont., who lives in Niagara Falls, is missing the start of the season as he gets treatment.
Jeanneret took part in a ceremonial puck drop with legendary Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly. Kelly was declared jaw cancer free in September.
