Stranger replaces disabled man’s stolen scooter

KELOWNA – Thanks to the kindness of a stranger, Jason Kemps is back behind the wheel after thieves slashed his fence and stole his mobility scooter from his yard.

Kemps, who lost his arm and leg in 1993, relied on his orange and black Gio scooter to get around town until late last month when his only means of transportation was taken from him.

After hearing about Kemps’ loss from a Global Okanagan news story, Peachland resident Frank Learning decided to do something extraordinary.

He showed up at Kemps door with a 2009 scooter he was planning to sell for $1,500 and handed him the key.

“I’ve got two of them so he might as well make use of this one,” Learning says. “If somebody else can use it, then go ahead, not a big deal.”

Kemps says he never expected that kind of response.

“I can get to the parks, go to the pharmacy, do grocery shopping, everything. Means the world,” he says.

An alarm system was also included with the gift.
