Subway strike causes traffic gridlock in Argentina’s capital

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Unions representing subway workers are staging a strike that is causing traffic gridlock in Argentina’s capital.

The stoppage began Wednesday after a subway worker died from an electrical shock. Many of the more than 1 million commuters who ride the subway’s six lines every day struggled to find taxis or buses. Traffic came to a halt in many Buenos Aires streets.

Authorities have identified the 24-year old as Matias Kruger. He also played indoor soccer for the Boca Juniors club and Argentina’s national team.

Argentina’s Football Association said in its Twitter account that it is in mourning.

The Metrovias company in charge of the subway’s concession says the cause of Kruger’s death was an accident while he worked at a workshop in one of the lines.
