CBC wins International Emmy for documentary on Bangladesh factory collapse

NEW YORK, N.Y. – CBC News has won an International Emmy for “Made in Bangladesh,” a documentary on the Rana Plaza factory collapse that killed more than 1,100 people in April 2013.

Mark Kelley of “The Fifth Estate” went to Bangladesh and interviewed garment workers who said they were still forced to make clothes in dangerous conditions for Canadian companies.

He also spoke to the jailed owner of one of the largest factories inside Rana Plaza, who revealed his long-standing and profitable connections to Canada.

Jennifer McGuire, general manager and editor-in-chief of CBC News, said in a release that the award is a testament to the priority the public broadcaster places on investigative journalism.

A British production, “Syria’s Descent,” also won an International Emmy for News and Current Affairs. The report, produced by ITN for Channel 4 News, charted the Mideast country’s plunge into despair as the civil war entered its third year with reports from battlefronts inside Syria and a refugee camp in Jordan.

The awards were presented Tuesday night in New York by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in conjunction with the U.S. News Emmys.
