NHL collective bargaining session ends after 90 minutes
TORONTO – NHL collective bargaining talks have ended for the day.
The meeting between the league and the NHL Players’ Association lasted about 90 minutes.
It was the first full bargaining session of the week after Wednesday’s talks were called off following a private meeting between top league and union executives.
Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly spent about two hours with players’ association executive director Donald Fehr and his brother Steve Fehr, the union’s No. 2 man.
The goal of that meeting Wednesday was to discuss the best way to move forward in the discussions.
Key economic issues were expected to be the main topic of conversation today.
The sides have put two very different offers on the table and are still grappling with a wide financial gap.
The current collective agreement is set to expire Sept. 15 when the NHL says it will lock out the players if a new deal hasn’t been reached.
