Penticton’s Fairview Road renamed Rory McIvor Way

PENTICTON – A prominent Penticton citizen was paid a posthumous honour today as the City officially changed the name of a portion of one of Penticton’s busiest streets.

The City announced the re-naming of a portion of Fairview Road to Rory McIvor Way at a public unveiling of the new street sign this afternoon, May 30, according to a media release.

“It’s always a great opportunity to recognize an active member of our community. After all the years Mr. McIvor spent giving back to our city, we are happy to be able to do something to remember him for his many contributions,” Penticton Mayor John Vassilaki said in the release.

Rory McIvor held the position of library director for 27 years, in addition to acting on the board of governors for Okanagan College and the director of the Okanagan Summer School of the Arts.

McIvor was also a city councillor from 2002 to 2008 and was the founder of the South Okanagan Community Foundation.

Today’s ceremony took place at the Penticton museum and library, and included McIvor’s family, members of Penticton city council, along with library board members staff.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
