New funding for women escaping violence announced for Penticton

PENTICTON – A provincially funded project is bringing sanctuary and support to women and children leaving violence in Penticton.

Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Selina Robinson announced at a press conference in Penticton today, May 24, funding to provide units for up to 36 women and children leaving violence.

The fund is part of a $734 million investment over 10 years that will build 1,500 transition housing, second stage housing and long-term housing spaces for women and children leaving violence, the ministry says in a media releae.

The South Okanagan Women in Need Society will manage the day-to-day operations and will oversee the resident selection process.

"For the first time in Penticton, thanks to BC Housing, SOWINS is now able to offer permanent, safe, affordable housing to women and children," Women in Need Society executive director Debbie Scarborough said in the release. "SOWINS is so excited to hand over the keys to these mums and their children, who now have new, safe and affordable homes."

Residents will receive support services which includes access to health services, counselling, resume building, interview skills and workshops, financial literacy and self-care.

“All efforts to assist and improve the lives of those in need are a welcome addition to the available housing supports in Penticton,” Penticton Mayor John Vassilaki said in the release.
