The Latest: Boy, 7, dies after wandering from summer camp

BOSTON – The Latest on a boy who wandered away from a Boston summer camp and later was found dead in the water at a beach (all times local):

5 p.m.

Boston has launched a review of protocols at all of its summer camps after a 7-year-old boy wandered away unnoticed from a camp and later was found dead in the water at a beach.

Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh said Wednesday the director of the Curley Community Center has been placed on paid administrative leave while the city and police investigate the death of Kyzr Willis. The community centre is where the day camp is held and includes a beach bathhouse where the boy was seen.

The Boston Globe reports the boy was last spotted by a lifeguard around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday getting out of the water at Carson Beach in the city’s South Boston neighbourhood.

Police Commissioner William Evans says the boy’s body was located around 7 p.m. Tuesday about 15 yards from the shore behind the bathhouse.

The boy’s mother tells the Globe nobody at the camp notified her he was missing.

Police are trying to determine how a 7-year-old boy wandered away unnoticed from a city-run summer camp at a Boston beach and ended up dead.

Kyzr Willis was last seen around 2 p.m. Tuesday near the L Street Bathhouse at Carson Beach in the city’s South Boston neighbourhood. His body was found around 7 p.m.

Willis was attending a day camp at the Curley Community Center, which includes the bathhouse.

It’s unclear how he slipped away from the camp, which is run by the Boston Centers for Youth and Families.

Quincy police, state police and the U.S. Coast Guard all assisted in the search.

The bathhouse will remain closed until further notice as police investigate.
