Buy Local gets big boost

KELOWNA – The provincial government has found an extra $2-million for the Buy Local program.

Agriculture minister and Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick made the announcement Saturday.

"The Buy Local program will continue to be a huge success in encouraging British Columbians to choose the high-quality foods grown and produced right here at home,” Letnick says in a media release. “Every purchase of a B.C. product contributes to jobs in our communities, and the food security of our province."

The money will be used to match dollars being spent on local food promotions by businesses and organizations. They can apply for funding for in-store promotions, social media and web campaigns or other advertising.

The B.C. government introduced the Buy Local program in the summer of 2013. It was an effort to replace the Buy B.C. program.

The government says the new program has been very successful building markets for food produced in our province.
