US stocks begin lower after 1st weekly loss since early August

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The stock market is down slightly in early trading after its first weekly loss since early August.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index eased two points, or 0.1 per cent, to 1,983 shortly after U.S. markets opened Monday. The S&P 500 fell 1.1 per cent last week, snapping five straight weeks of gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 15 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 16,972. The Nasdaq edged down 11 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 4,556.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note stood at 2.59 per cent. That was down slightly from its highest level in two months late Friday, 2.61 per cent.
