Merkel to close visit to Ottawa with talks on Parliament Hill with Harper
OTTAWA – Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived on Parliament Hill for a final meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Among other things, Harper will receive an update on the European economic situation.
But his government maintains that Canada will not contribute a global bailout package through the International Monetary Fund.
Merkel and Harper are also expected to discuss Canada’s bid for a free-trade pact with the European Union.
The 90-minute meeting in Harper’s office caps Merkel’s two-day trip to Canada where the troubled world economy dominated discussion.
Meanwhile, a major German warship-builder and a leading Canadian defence contractor were among 10 companies preparing for talks of their own this morning.
The business leaders are to attend a luncheon with the Merkel and Harper today in Ottawa before the German chancellor departs for Halifax.
