Chilean tourists plead not guilty in Malaysia slaying

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Lawyers for two Chilean tourists who could face death sentences if convicted of killing a man in Malaysia say the duo acted in self-defence and should be acquitted.

The two men pleaded not guilty Monday to killing a 28-year-old Malaysian at a Kuala Lumpur hotel on Aug. 4, 2017, less than 24 hours after arriving in Malaysia.

Lawyer Venkateswari Alagendra says the Malaysian demanded money from the duo at the hotel lobby and tried to attack them with his shoes.

She says the men acted in self-defence and called the police but the Malaysian had by then died.

She says she is confident the duo will be acquitted as it was “an accident.” The court set trial to resume Sept 24.
