BELGRADE, Serbia – Serbian police say they have arrested 11 people suspected of smuggling dozens of migrants across the border to EU-member Hungary.
Serbian police said Monday the arrests were the result of “intensive operational work and exchange of information with the Hungarian police.”
The statement says two of those arrested were the suspected organizers of the smuggling operation, while the others allegedly transferred the migrants to Hungary and then on to Austria.
People smuggling has been on the rise in the Balkans since nations closed their borders for migrants in March in a bid to stem the flow after more than 1 million asylum-seekers entered Europe in 2015.
Several thousand migrants have been stuck in Serbia and elsewhere in the Balkans looking for clandestine routes into the European Union.
