Wreck of blueberry-laden freighter emerges off Cape Cod

ORLEANS, Mass. – Marine surveyors say a British freighter that was carrying 230 tons of frozen blueberries when it sank off the coast of Cape Cod in 1939 has begun to emerge again on the ocean floor about 400 feet offshore.

Marine surveyor John Perry Fish tells the Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/2cPAU6k ) that new sonar images show the Lutzen is in about 20 feet of water with the bow and stern visible.

Fish conducted the sonar mapping Sept. 26 in conjunction with the state Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources.

Shipwreck historian William Quinn wrote in 1973 that the 339-ton Lutzen grounded in a fog en route to New York City from Saint John, New Brunswick.

Much of the blueberry cargo was unloaded, but because it was frozen it ended up in Cape Cod pies.
