Bettman says NHL will lock out players if no new CBA deal in place by Sept. 15

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Gary Bettman says the NHL will lock out its players if a new collective bargaining agreement can’t be reached by Sept. 15.

The NHL commissioner delivered that news to the NHL Players’ Association during a bargaining session on Thursday and confirmed it with reporters afterwards.

That leaves just 37 days for the sides to bridge what both consider to be a wide gap in talks.

Donald Fehr, the NHLPA’s executive director, had said repeatedly that they could agree to proceed with a new season even if a new agreement wasn’t in place when the current one expires.

However, that’s not something Bettman and the NHL’s owners are interested in pursuing.

Fehr is expected to deliver a counter-proposal to the league when the sides meet in Toronto next week.
