PARIS – A former hospital intern in the southern city of Marseille suspected of planning a trip to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside Islamic extremists has been charged with terror offences.
Paris prosecutors’ office said Friday that the suspect, whose identity has not been revealed, was arrested in Turkey just before Christmas and placed in custody.
He has been charged with criminal conspiracy in connection with a terrorist enterprise.
The trainee doctor, who worked at Marseille’s biggest hospital La Timone and post hatred messages on social media, had reportedly chosen to be called “Albistouri,”a nickname with an Arabic tone based on the word “bistouri,” which translates as scalpel.
France remains in a state of emergency following a string of attacks that left more than 200 dead over the past 20 months.
