Man from Vancouver sentenced to 25 years for 2008 NYC sex-attack case
NEW YORK, N.Y. – A Canadian man has been sentenced to a quarter-century in a New York prison for sexually assaulting a woman in 2008.
Greg Poirier (PWAH’-ree-ay) was convicted of following a woman into her apartment building, pushing her into her home and sexually assaulting her.
He got the maximum sentence Monday in the 2008 case. He’s already serving another five years in a similar, separate case.
The 39-year-old from the Vancouver area told a Manhattan judge on Monday that the sentence didn’t matter to him because he plans to appeal.
He pointed to his heritage and beliefs as a Native Canadian and said he felt mistreated by the U.S. justice system.
Poirier was convicted last month of charges including sexually motivated burglary.
Defence lawyer Hershel Katz says Poirier maintains his innocence.
Poirier was working as a truck driver in New York.
