Utah man accused of plotting mass shooting at mall sentenced to probation, treatment

SALT LAKE CITY – A Utah man who faced up to 15 years in prison in a mass shooting plot at an upscale mall has been sentenced to probation and is receiving mental health treatment.

Documents show a civil lawsuit filed by the mall has also been dismissed after 43-year-old Jack Harry Stiles agreed stay away from City Creek Center.

Prosecutors say Stiles planned to randomly shoot people on the anniversary of his mother’s death, as well as open fire at a movie theatre and wire a bomb underneath a bus.

Stiles agreed to a plea deal in May that transferred him to a court program for defendants in need of mental health treatment and put him on probation for three years.

Stiles’ defence attorney said Wednesday he is responding well to treatment.
