BUCHAREST, Romania – Authorities say four people have died after the cart they were travelling in overturned in a swollen river in eastern Romania.
The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said Wednesday that two grandparents and their two grandchildren were swept away by torrents of water Tuesday evening after their cart capsized in a flooded river in the village of Magurele, in the county of Tulcea.
Firefighters searched the river and were able to retrieve the body of a 58-woman, a 4-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl. Efforts to resuscitate them failed.
Authorities located the body of a 68-year-old man about 500 metres (yards) downstream on Wednesday. There were no further details available.
The deaths come after days of heavy rain and flooding in parts of Romania.
