Immigrant parents protest detention in advocate letter

SAN ANTONIO – An immigration advocacy group has released a letter it says is from inside a detention facility where men and their children are protesting how they’re being treated.

San Antonio-based RAICES said Thursday that the letter came from a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Karnes City, Texas. RAICES says a group of fathers is refusing to eat, and their sons refused to go to class. ICE denied Thursday that any detainees had skipped meals or classes.

The letter is handwritten in Spanish. It says the families inside are “tired and desperate,” with no answer as to why they remain detained when others have been released.

More than 1,800 children have been placed with parents or sponsors after separation under President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance policy. But hundreds were reunited and placed in family detention.
