Winnipeg backs off singing ban on transit buses, allows non-disturbing vocals

WINNIPEG – Winnipeg city hall is changing its tune about people who sing on transit buses.

The city had proposed a bylaw that called for a $100 fine for disruptive behaviour on buses, including singing and musical performances.

There was an immediate backlash by some residents who said there should be higher priorities for city hall.

The idea was also mocked on social media, with some people questioning whether mimes would be tolerated.

Now, the city says it is amending the proposed rules to allow for singing that does not disturb other passengers or the driver.

Winnipeg Transit director Dave Wardrop says the wording will be changed so that it will not limit people’s freedom of expression.
