African migrants protest again at southern Mexico border

MEXICO CITY – Some of the hundreds of African migrants stuck at Mexico’s southern border are protesting the government’s refusal to let them travel to the U.S. border.

Hundreds of migrants from Angola, Cameroon, Ghana, and Congo have travelled to South America and made their way up through Central American to Mexico. They want transit visas to reach the United States and apply for asylum, saying they face oppression.

Mexico has refused such permits. Following protests last week, Mexico set up tables in the southern city of Tapachula to negotiate other options, like asylum in Mexico.

But a group that rejects anything but transit visas broke up those sessions Wednesday, flipping chairs and tables. Mexico’s immigration agency said it won’t hold further sessions until the migrants act in an orderly way.
