Privacy watchdog alerted as student names, grades released in bulk email
SURREY, B.C. – British Columbia’s privacy commissioner and the education ministry have been alerted to an incident involving one high school in Surrey, B.C., and about 250 of its students.
Surrey School District spokesman Doug Strachan says an email with a mistakenly-added attachment was sent from the school to parents.
The document contained the names, student numbers, attendance records and final grades of most members of the school’s graduating class.
Strachan says the type of information released does not require immediate notification of the privacy commissioner, but the board has gone beyond expectations in hopes of resolving the situation.
He adds the staff member who made the error won’t face disciplinary action but feels very badly.
Concerned parents are urged to follow up with the district. (News1130, CKNW, Global)
