‘Of Human Bondage’ wins leading seven trophies at Dora Mavor Moore Awards

TORONTO – “Of Human Bondage” was the big winner at the Dora Mavor Moore Awards celebrating Toronto theatre Monday night, winning seven trophies.

The Soulpepper Theatre Company show, based on the W. Somerset Maugham novel, got honours including best production, best new play and best direction by Albert Schultz.

The Canadian Stage production of “London Road” got six awards in the musical theatre division, including best production, best ensemble and best direction by Jackie Maxwell.

“Les Miserables,” which was tied with “London Road” with a leading 11 nominations, nabbed just two awards — one for costume design and an acting nod for Melissa O’Neil.

“Sultans of the Street” from Young People’s Theatre swept the Young Audiences division, winning all five trophies.

Now into their 35th year, the annual awards are presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts and celebrate excellence in the city’s theatre, dance and opera.

Actor and director Diana Leblanc received this year’s Silver Ticket Award for career achievement as well as helping nurture the development of Canadian theatre.
