TORONTO – Health Canada says an unauthorized product called Vine Essence is being recalled because testing shows it contains lead that exceeds acceptable levels.

The department says the product also contains low levels of undeclared acetaminophen, a drug used for pain relief.

Health Canada says infants, young children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women are particularly vulnerable from exposure to Vine Essence.

Vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or even death can result from short-term exposure to lead.

The department says the low level of acetaminophen found in the product doesn’t represent a health risk for the general population but could pose problems for people sensitive to acetaminophen.

Vine Essence is an unauthorized natural health product promoted as supporting the health and well-being of bones, muscles and tendons, and the circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems.

It was distributed in Canada by United Wings Enterprise Inc., of Richmond Hill, Ont.

Health Canada says to date it hasn’t received any reports of adverse reactions associated with the use of this product.
