B.C. man gets lengthy jail sentence for keeping HIV status from sex partners
NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – A British Columbia man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for keeping his HIV status from his sexual partners.
New Westminster police say they received a tip in November 2009 that Bongani Nyoni was engaging in sexual activity with several women without disclosing to them that he was HIV-positive.
The incidents took place in 2007 and 2008.
In June 2010 New Westminster police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Nyoni, then 38, on three counts of aggravated sexual assault.
According to court testimony, two of the women later tested positive for HIV.
Nyoni was found guilty earlier this year by a B.C. Supreme Court jury and he was sentenced last week.
