Sunshine to start Thanksgiving long weekend in Okanagan

OKANAGAN – Okanagan residents can look forward to a mostly pleasant Thanksgiving holiday weekend with sunny skies prevailing through Sunday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan says a system moving down the B.C. coast today, Oct. 5, may result in some rain in the Okanagan.

The forecast calls increasing clouds today with a 30 per cent chance of showers this afternoon and evening, and a high of 11 Celsius. There is a chance of patchy frost overnight.

The return of a ridge of high pressure on Saturday will see a return to sunshine after some morning fog and a high of 14 C.

Saturday night the temperatures will dip to freezing before bouncing back to 12 C under sunny skies on Sunday.

Clouds will roll in Sunday afternoon, however, and valley residents can expect to see periods of rain with a high of 10 C on holiday Monday, with overnight lows hovering around 5 C.

The Okanagan may see up to 20 mm of rain through Tuesday, with freezing levels dropping to between 1,800 and 2,000 feet.

Normal highs and lows for Kelowna this time of year are 15 C and 4 C.

Castellan says in spite of October being only five days old, the average monthly temperature for October has so far been trending a full degree below normal for this time of year at 7.8 C compared to a normal 8.8 C. He says the cooler trend is expected to continue.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
