More than 100 students stung by wasps during Terry Fox run in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – The Terry Fox Run at a Kamloops elementary school today went south after 135 students were stung by a swarm of wasps.

Dufferin Elementary school principal Colleen Topolovec says during the school's annual Terry Fox walk, today, Sept. 27, a wasp nest ended up getting kicked and resulted in a swarm of wasps spreading and stinging students.

"B.C. ambulance, Kamloops Search and Rescue and Kamloops Fire were all here to triage and make sure the (students) were OK," Topolovec says.

Two students were taken to hospital as a precaution, but the principal says everyone is doing fine. Some parents arrived to pick up some students.

"We are lucky no one had an anaphylactic reaction," she says, adding school staff acted quickly once the swarm of wasps began stinging students.

The Terry Fox walk started around 11:30 a.m. and followed a trail around the perimeter of the school.
