Scary surprises at East Kelowna Hall

KELOWNA – If you like scary surprises and frightening fun, the East Kelowna Community Hall is back hosting the second annual Grumpy Witch Haunted House.

“It’s fun to scare people and it’s fun to be scared,” event coordinator Lisa Mirabent said. Mirabent and dozens of volunteers spent the last week setting up rooms with names like the Chop Shop, the Witches House, Spiders Den and the Dungeon Torture Chamber.

“We’re told that it’s a lot scarier this year,” community hall president Kathy Bullach said.

This is the second year the association has put on the event, with the majority of decorations coming from Bullach’s own private collection.

She recruited the majority of the volunteers from her own group of friends and family. 

“I just love Halloween,” Bullach said. “It’s getting out of hand, actually.”

All of the scary volunteers are encouraged to move around as much as they want and to be creative. 

“We couldn’t do this without them. If people are still coming through the door at 9 p.m., they just keep working.”

“They did a fantastic job this year,” said Brian Mcdow, who brought his five-year-old daughter Naiobh. “It might be too scary for young kids though.”

The Grumpy Witch Haunted House runs Oct. 25 to Oct. 31 with all proceeds going towards restoration of the East Kelowna Community Hall.
