From golfers to kids, school district to buy nine hole golf course
LAKE COUNTRY – What’s good for the kids isn’t so good for local golfers.
The Central Okanagan School District has bought the Aspen Grove Golf Course to build a new school and sports fields.
Aspen Grove is the only course in Lake Country. It will officially close its doors on Christmas Eve.
The school district needs to build a new middle school for grade six to grade eight students as enrolment continues to grow in the Kelowna bedroom community.
The new school will be built at the northern end of the George Elliot Secondary property on Bottom Wood Lake Road. Until the new school is built, a six-classroom portable is going up for the Grade 7 students.
The deal to buy the golf course has been finalized now that the Agricultural Land Commission has signed off on it. The property wasn’t removed from the Agriculture Land Reserve. Instead, the commission removed the “non-farm use” designation.
It’ll be a while before the new middle school is built. It’s the fourth priority on the school district’s Five Year Capital Plan. The district also needs funding from the province when it’s time to break ground.
