B.C. SPCA seizes 16 ‘distressed’ dogs in Quesnel

QUESNEL – Sixteen dogs that were "in distress" have been seized from a property in Quesnel.

The B.C. SPCA says in a news release the dogs, which include German shepherds, a Yorkshire terrier, a retriever, bull terriers, standard poodles, Portuguese water dogs, a Pekingese, corgi-border collie crosses and miniature pinschers, were being kept in crates too small for their size in a poorly ventilated area, with little or no access to water, and with feces and urine-soaked matting.

Karin Adams and her daughter Catherine Adams are facing possible animal cruelty charges. The women are known to the B.C. SPCA. They were convicted of animal cruelty in 2015 following an investigation, and their sentence included a 20-year ban on owning animals.

“It is extremely frustrating when we deal with repeat offenders, particularly those who breach the terms of their sentencing,” Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the B.C. SPCA says in the release. “However, we are pleased that these dogs are now safe and are getting the attention and care they need.”

The B.C. SPCA says the investigation continues and charges of animal cruelty will be recommended. The pair could also face charges for allegedly violating the conditions of their 2015 sentence.

The dogs are currently in the care of SPCA shelters in the region.
