Philanthropist to raise awareness of booze and drugs as hockey riot legacy
VANCOUVER – A B.C. philanthropist says he’ll mark the anniversary of Vancouver’s Stanley Cup riot by launching a foundation to raise awareness about alcohol and drug abuse.
Former broadcasting executive Miles Craig says the video of the riot pushed him to create the Canadian Temperance Foundation, which begins operations on Friday, the first anniversary of the riot.
He points out an investigation of the riot blamed alcohol for fuelling much of the violence in downtown Vancouver last June 15.
Craig’s foundation will use the Internet and a media campaign to raise awareness about over indulging in liquor or drugs.
He says the campaign will try to help people of all ages realize alcohol isn’t needed to have fun.
