Setting sun a factor in Kelowna car accident

KELOWNA – A 67-year-old Kelowna man was hit by a car while crossing a street in the Mission neighbourhood late yesterday afternoon.

RCMP say the accident happened at the intersection of Sarsons Road and Pinegrove Road at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14.

The 19-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Malibu westbound on Sarsons Road hit the pedestrian while turning left onto Pinegrove Road, according to an RCMP media release.

A nearby area resident heard the incident, called 911 and provided first aid until emergency crews arrived, RCMP say.

The man was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

“RCMP have ruled out alcohol as a factor in the collision, however believe the glare from the setting sun likely played a role in this unfortunate incident,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in the release.

Police say the driver cooperated with the investigation.

If you witnessed this incident and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
