Couple nabbed for allegedly transporting drugs near Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – A couple could be facing drug trafficking charges after they were stopped by police on the Coquihalla Highway on Valentine's Day.

Central Interior Traffic Services stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 5 near Kamloops on Feb. 14. After speaking with the driver, a man from Surrey, police found he didn't have a driver's licence and the vehicle wasn't registered to him, or his female passenger also from Surrey, according to an RCMP news release.

The couple was further questioned regarding their travel plans, which made the officer suspicious about their intentions and believed the couple was involved in drug trafficking.

Police arrested the couple and a police dog found a large quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine inside containers in the trunk.

"This was a great example of how quickly things can change for our officers patrolling the highways, which led to this significant drug seizure as a result of stopping a vehicle for speeding," E-Division Traffic Police Dog Services Cpl. Gregg Calibaba says in the release.

The driver and passenger are facing possible charges for possession for the purpose of trafficking. The driver was issued tickets for speeding and not having a valid driver's licence, and the vehicle was impounded.
