Vernon RCMP remind public to keep alert following alleged purse snatching

VERNON – Police are investigating an alleged purse snatching in downtown Vernon.

Police say a 71-year-old woman reported that a man rode up behind her on a bike while she was walking in the area of 32 Street and 29 Avenue and grabbed her purse.

The alleged incident happened in the area of 32 Street and 29 Avenue and was reported to police about 4 p.m. on Jan. 31, RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett says in a media release.

The man cycled away down a nearby alley with the woman’s purse, which was reported to contain a large amount of cash.

“No violence was used, the suspect simply grabbed the purse and cycled away, later dropping the purse and its contents, which was recovered, in the alley nearby,” Brett says. “The suspect male was not located, and the victim was unable to provide a description as it occurred so quickly.”

The Vernon RCMP is reminding pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings at all times and to keep personal belongings secured to their bodies, whenever possible.

“The victim of this incident called the RCMP the next day to report that the money that she thought was taken, was found in one of her pockets,” Brett says. “It is good to hear that this person has found the rent money she thought she lost and that this ended with a good outcome for her.”
