Snow storm left dozens stranded at Vancouver Island ski resort

COURTENAY, B.C. – Chairlift operations resumed today on Mount Washington on Vancouver Island after a snowstorm left dozens stranded.

Sheila Rivers of Mount Washington Alpine Resort says about 20 boy scouts and a dozen other people spent a night at its lodge when more than a meter of snow fell.

While fresh snow is typically welcomed by skiers and snowboarders, Rivers says the sudden storm resulted in avalanches, making conditions unsafe.

She says crews were out Sunday ensuring safety measures were in place.

Those stranded Saturday night enjoyed the restaurant and bar with a clear view of the storm, while the boy scouts had a late-night nacho party and movies the next day.

Rivers says two of the resorts lifts reopened today but its alpine lift will likely remain closed due to safety concerns.
