Kelowna sheriff honoured for excelling at his job

KELOWNA – They are the unsung protectors of the justice system in our province, quite literally.

The B.C. Sheriff Services are responsible for the security and prisoner handling at the provincial courthouses across the province.

On Saturday night, the government body handed out one of its highest honours to one of Kelowna’s own.

Inspector Nathan Davies with the Kelowna Sheriffs Office was honoured with the Deputy Chief Gene Walsh Commendation. With the award Davies is being recognized for excelling at his job, handling difficult situations with grace and professionalism and demonstrating a high level of dedication above and beyond the scope of his duties.

B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon and Attorney General Suzanne Anton presented the award at a gala in Coquitlam.

“Sheriffs play an important role in the Ministery of Justice and we are proud of their long and distinguished service,” said Suzanne Anton, who is also the Minister of Justice.

Governor James Douglas appointed the first sheriff for the colony of Vancouver Island back in 1857. When the Sheriffs Act was created a few years later, the role of the sheriff was to manage the jail, collect taxes and act as the government agent and gold commissioner.
