Remains of woman in her 90s may never be found after Penticton house fire

PENTICTON – The body of an elderly woman believed killed in a house fire a week ago may never be recovered.

In a media release issued by Penticton RCMP today, police made clear their investigation continues and they are considering her a missing person despite what appears to be obvious.

Mary Ruth Esta, 92, was suspected to have died in the Lakeside Road residential fire on Oct. 11. Emergency officials found no sign of her in the debris, or any other place she might be.

In the same release, a family member acknowledged that it's very likely she died in the fire.

“Due to her age and medical condition it is unlikely that she could have got out, and we understand that it may be unlikely that she is ever located,” said Esta’s step-son Rick Gammer. “Our family is very appreciative of the efforts of all first responders and realize what a difficult job it is for them.”

RCMP spokesperson Spl. Don Wrigglesworth says the police have no reason to suspect foul play at this time and are continuing to work with the family to explore other investigative avenues.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
