Saturday BBQ held to raise awareness of homelessness struggles in the summer

KELOWNA – While people continue to enjoy summer activities, Kelowna’s Gospel Mission wants to remind the public that the homeless are still struggling.

The Gospel Mission is holding a “Homelessness is No Picnic” barbecue on Saturday, August 5, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Jubilee Grandstands in Kelowna City Park.

“Summer in the Okanagan is a fun, happy time for most people,” said Randy Benson, Kelowna’s Gospel Mission’s executive director in a press release. “Our homeless people, however struggle to find suitable, affordable housing in a time where the rental market is extremely competitive. We invite our friends to come together, have a burger and get to know their community members.”

With the extreme heat that Okanagan summers are known for, the homeless are at-risk of severe sunburn, dehydration and heatstroke. Additionally, this year, the lingering smoke poses a threat to those who spend time outdoors. 

Gordon Food Services is providing the food for this event.
