UPDATE: Firefighters making good progress on Knox Mountain fire
KELOWNA — Crews continue to work a fire in Knox Mountain Park although air tanker and helicopter support has been withdrawn.
Kelowna Fire Department deputy chief Lou Wilde said in a press release crews responded to report of a brush fire near the second lookout around 2 p.m.
Wilde said 18 KFD members and a three-member initial attack team from B.C. Forest Service were involved in the initial effort.
The tinder-dry Knox Mountain Park has been closed to vehicle traffic since early July, while pedestrian access to Paul's Tomb has been closed.
Wilde did not indicate a possible cause for the fire and said no homes are currently under threat.
Billowing white smoke could be seen from all over the city and a crowd gathered in the North End to watch the fire fighting efforts.
