Monte Lake family who lost everything but each other, speaks out for the first time

KAMLOOPS – The family wasn't home when flames tore up Martin Mountain and engulfed their home leaving nothing but ashes and embers.

The mother of that family, Tobin Doyle Stuart, has released a written statement today, July 28, on behalf of herself, her partner Shane Robertson and their two children.

In her statement, Stuart says the family is too exhausted and overwhelmed to speak about the fire right now, but she is writing to thank everyone who has helped and supported the family over the past few days.

She says they have received so much support since the fire started their hearts are bursting.

Stuart goes on to say they have been focusing on getting their girls what they need.

"They are healthy, happy, clothed and fed, and that is due to the efforts of our friends and family, and the beautiful kindness of strangers," she says in her statement. "The clothes, toys, baby items, books and other donations have helped ease so much of the stress of losing our home."

Stuart also thanks those who have contributed to the family's Gofundme campaign which was set up by a family friend. Within a day it had already surpassed the $10,000 mark and continues to climb with donations ranging from $25 to $1,000. She says a 100 Mile House evacuee who lost her farm dropped off a care package for Stuart's girls.

"There are no words. This summer's fires have destroyed so many homes and memories. They have also shown how genuinely good people can be to each other. To those who have helped us, we will be forever grateful and say thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
