South Okanagan communities warming up to idea of wildfire prevention

PENTICTON – Regional District communities hit by recent wildfires are showing interest in the provincial Firesmart program.

Area D director Tom Siddon told the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board on July 20 a community group in Kaleden was interested in applying for a wildfire prevention grant following a wildfire in that community earlier this month.

Community services manager Mark Woods called the provincial Firesmart program a “very good program,” noting it was created so communities could fireproof private land while the Regional District focused on Crown lands.

He said the Regional District would facilitate the group’s applications for a $10,000 fireproofing grant, as well as making the district’s professional forester contractor available to the community.

“Any community interested should reach out to us, we’ll work with them to get grants,” Woods said, noting the community of Faulder had just begun a Firesmart program.

Calling it a “good first step” West Bench director Michael Brydon also called the program “far short of adequate.”

Brydon said some thinning of trees on Penticton Indian Band land and around the West Bench reservoir helped prevent a wildfire that broke out in that community earlier this month from “running and taking 80 homes with it.”

He urged directors to push for wildfire funding at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention.

“It just takes a walk in our interface areas to see we’re so far short of adequate – we can’t rely on neighbourhood groups to solve this problem,” Brydon said.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
