Man shot by police in Salmon Arm may be released from hospital this month

KAMLOOPS – Court proceedings are being adjourned while a man shot by police in Salmon Arm recovers in a Kamloops hospital.

Kaymen Winter, 22, was set to appear in Kamloops Provincial Court today, March 9. His lawyer Graham Kay told the court that Winter is still recovering from his injuries.

"Due to the serious nature of the injuries he has, he's still in hospital," Kay said.

He said Winter, who is technically in custody while he recovers at Royal Inland Hospital, is expected to be taken to Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre after his release.

Kay said the hospital staff is having discussions about when Winter will be released, but no firm date has been set.

Winter's next court appearance is scheduled for March 20, where he will appear on the more than 20 charges he's facing in connection the incident. He'll also be appearing on outstanding charges he's facing, none of which are from Kamloops, and several are from jurisdictions in the Lower Mainland.

Kay said it's possible Winter will be at correctional centre by his next scheduled appearance.

Winter's family has previously said he was driving to the Lower Mainland to deal with outstanding charges on Jan. 30 when he stopped at the Xcalibur Car Wash in Salmon Arm.

The Independent Investigations Office is investigating the incident and originally said the man attempted to escape police, and an altercation led to officers firing shots.

According to court documents, Winter is facing up to 24 charges in connection to the incident including possession of stolen property, carrying, using, or threatening to use a weapon, resisting or obstructing a police officer, theft and mischief.
