Pedestrian taken to hospital after being hit by car in Vernon

VERNON – A close scrape has the North Okanagan RCMP reminding pedestrians to make sure drivers can see them.

The advice comes after a man walking in the 5100 block of Bella Vista Road last week was hit by a car.

It was around 7 p.m. on Feb. 27 when a Ford car travelling west on Bella Vista Road hit the 56-year-old man, who was walking westward on the right shoulder, Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy says.

The man was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

“It was extremely dark on that section of roadway, and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing,” Noseworthy says.

The 23-year-old driver stayed at the scene and is not facing any charges related to the collision.

Noseworthy says it’s a good idea to get some reflectors and/or lights if you are going to be walking in the dark. Pedestrians are also supposed to walk facing oncoming traffic.
