Car blows through stop sign, collides with Vernon building

VERNON – Drivers in Vernon are being reminded to slow down and watch for ice after a car went through a stop sign and ended up colliding with a building.

Just after 8 a.m. this morning, Feb. 17, Vernon Fire and Rescue crews responded to a two vehicle crash at 33 Street and 35 Avenue in Vernon, Capt. Brent Bond says.

The crash happened when a car travelling east on 35 avenue went through the stop sign, lost control, and careened into a fence and a building.

The other vehicle, an SUV, got spun around and ended up stuck in the roadway. Both vehicles have to be towed. The occupants were not seriously hurt and no one was taken to hospital.

As for the the cause of the crash, Bond says it’s clear the driver wasn’t paying attention, but says ice could be a factor as well.

“People are enjoying the warmer weather and not realizing it’s still freezing overnight,” Bond says.

That's leading to icy sections on area roads, and a reminder from the fire department to watch out for morning frost and to slow down.
