PENTICTON – The man accused of attempting to smuggle firearms across the Osoyoos border two weeks ago asked for a three week adjournment to prepare his case.

Alex Louie appeared before Judge Gale Sinclair in Penticton court this morning, making the request because of difficulties he’s having making phone calls and preparing documents while in custody at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver.

Louie faces numerous weapons charges related to the early morning Feb. 1 incident in which border officials caught the indigenous man with two handguns wired to the undercarriage of his vehicle.

In a previous court appearances, Louie declared himself a “North American Indian” who does not have a treaty with Canada and refuses to recognize Canadian sovereignty.

So far, Louie has represented himself in the matter.

Crown Prosecutor Ashleigh Baylis said she had no problem with Louie’s adjournment, asking the record show it was his request for the delay.

Louie’s next appearance is slated for Mar. 8.
