GPS and survival smarts contribute to rescue

KELOWNA – It was a textbook case of how to behave if you find yourself in the middle of nowhere and need help.

A man driving a quad on a trail a few kilometres off McCulloch Road near Browne Lake got stuck Friday evening.

He tried to walk out, but when the temperature dipped to -4 C around midnight he realized he needed help.

“The individual had concerns regarding how long it might take him to get out of the remote area,” Paul Topin with Central Okanagan Search and Rescue says in a media release. “He assessed he was at risk of exposure as he was not dressed as was required for the low evening temperatures.”

The man called for help and was able to give his rescuers his exact position with GPS.

He then built a fire and waitied for a Search and Rescue team to arrive.

Two teams on quads were dispatched and the man was found in good shape at about 3 a.m. Saturday.
